Finally, I struck gold in finding an authentic and delicious Indian Fusion restaurant! While Los Angeles has the fourth largest Indian population in the United States, one would believe that we have an excellent array of Indian restaurants covering various regional cuisine. Not the case. I have sampled over 50 different Indian restaurants throughout my 30 plus years as a food connoisseur and found only a handful of restaurants that I can rate as authentic and excellent. G Star Grill & Wings, a newly established, three-month old restaurant in the heart of Little India is situated in the main strip of Pioneer Boulevard among a sea of restaurants and sari shoppes. This restaurant offers an extensive list of dishes from Uttar Pradesh, Nepal, Bengali, Odia, Mughlai, and Chettinad. During my first visit, I decided to order a variety of dishes including the appetizers Raj Kachori, Chicken Momos as well as entreés Macher Kalia (Rui Fish), Hyderabadi Chicken Dum Biryani, Shahi (Korma) Chicken, and Chettinad Chicken. The Raj Kachori is a popular breakfast/snack food. This version is an open-faced deep-fried pastry dough filled with potatoes, lentils, onion, yogurt, cilantro and tamarind chutney. One bite of the Raj Kachori and all those flavours and textures came rushing through my mouth – amazing! The Chicken Momos which are chicken steamed dumplings were perfectly wrapped and seasoned into the homemade dough. The Macher Kalia (Rui Fish), a river carp usually served at weddings consist of several pieces of fried fish cooked in a poppy seed paste, green/red chilies, mustard oil, turmeric powder, Garam Masala, etc. The Hyderabadi Chicken Dum Biryani are pieces of boneless chicken (usually lamb) cooked in a mixture of dry spices among a bed of basmati rice. The rice absorbs all the flavours of the chicken, the bones and the spices. Think of it as an Indian version of paella. The Shahi (Korma) Chicken is a non-spicy curry blend of coconut, almond, cream and sugar with the “Shahi (royal)” garnishes – paneer, raisins and cashews. The Chicken Chettinad is yet another curry with yogurt, turmeric, red chili paste, coconut, fennel/cumin/coriander seeds, kalpasi (Black Stone Flower), etc. It is the kalpasi that adds the unique flavour for this delightful chicken dish from Chettinad. Most Americans do not realize how complicated Indian cuisine can be. It’s not just spicy or not spicy. The complex spices used in curry and other dishes can be baffling. The main goal is a balance of heat/spiciness, sweet, and savoury which requires a highly trained chef to achieve this firework of flavours! Chef/owner Gatham, the “G” in Star Grill & Wings, has certainly brought his undeniable knowledge and expertise to his restaurant.
Fun spot to eat while out shopping. Selection ranges from some interesting fusion to more traditional food. We had some indochinese fusion which tasted really nice as well. Read some of the negative reviews, kinda confused. The owner/chef was super nice and friendly with us
We have been looking for a #buffet #restaurant in #Artesia for a while. We are very glad to find GStar is expanding thier offering. Food is delicious, not heavy with oils. They have a great selection on their buffet. Staff is very friendly and attentive. Must visit next time you are in the area
I wish I took pics of the food. We had the classic Buffalo wings and lamb chops. Both were very good. The Buffalo wings weren’t actually Buffalo but some type of tandoori wings, which were way better than Buffalo wings. Definitely recommend this place.
"The best!" The review can be done only with those 2 words. Best customer service, best fusion food, best Indo-Chinese & best venue for small events. This place is fairly new & their food is work of art. They're not shy to add the right Indian spices & they know the precise amount to tickle your tastebuds. Calling out to my all Bangladeshi foodies out there, try this place! We celebrated a birthday party there. There were more than 40 guests & it's a rarity that everyone (including kids) loves the food. We arranged a buffet style event & every single guest at least filled their plates twice. Crazy part is, almost no one wasted the food. We still had a lot of leftovers, which we gladly packed & will enjoy for couple of days :) Gautam & his team were hospitable & made sure everything runs smoothly. Food trays were filled right on time & kept hot until the end of the party. Tables were rearranged to our needs. And the place was well decorated & well lit for the pictures. Ample amount of parking in the back & street parking available as well. Now the main part, food: 1. Fried momo/dumplings - the best appetizer for any party. Everyone will fall in love. Guaranteed! 2. Tandoori & Szechuan garlic wings - succulent, juicy, flavorful & finger licking good 3. Hakka noodles - everyone's favorite substitute for rice 4. Kadhai goat - they used fatty rib meats & it came out like bomb! Spices were on point & stew were perfect for dipping the naan & you finger all the way 4. Chili Paneer - perfect Indo-Chinese food. Went good with rice, naan & even noodles. Indian cottage cheese used (unlike some other places use tofu or fake cheese) 5. Naan - came out a bit overcooked, but not so dry that not edible. Next time, I'll ask them to keep an extra eye on the naan 6. Fried rice - seasoning & texture was good. My only issue was the quality of the rice & the amount of salt. The rice was thick & the saltiness was a bit extra with all other items We tried their food before arranging the party. Chicken clear Soup reminded me of my country's soup & brought back so much memories. Mixed grill platter had different kinds of grill & ALL of them were great. Chicken tikka masala was so good that we had to order extra paratha to finish that Overall experience was A-class! We're extremely happy with everything. We'll definitely recommend this place to everyone we know & I can vouch as a South Asian guy, this is the real deal!
Tried this place for the first time and it was delicious! Ordered butter chicken with garlic naan. Food came out quickly and was served fresh and hot. Good tasting food and decent sized portions. They have a big menu so I look forward to coming back and trying other things on the menu!
